MetaMask
MetaMask is less a wallet in the Coinbase/Exodus sense and more the connective tissue for the Ethereum ecosystem — nearly every DeFi protocol and NFT marketplace expects you to connect via MetaMask. It's a hot wallet by default, and its ubiquity makes it a frequent target for phishing sites impersonating real dApps.
Fees
| Wallet usage | Free |
| Built-in swap | 0.875% fee |
| Network gas fees | Set by the network, not MetaMask |
Security
MetaMask itself is open-source and doesn't custody funds — but as a browser extension holding a hot-wallet seed, it inherits browser-level risks and is the most impersonated wallet in phishing attacks. Pairing it with a Ledger or Trezor for actual signing removes most of that exposure while keeping the dApp compatibility.
Pros and cons
Pros
- The most widely supported wallet for Ethereum dApps
- Open-source
- Can pair with hardware wallets for signing
Cons
- Browser extension is a common phishing target
- Ethereum/EVM-focused — not built for Bitcoin
- Seed phrase management is entirely the user's responsibility
Verdict
The default wallet for interacting with Ethereum and most EVM-compatible apps. Excellent for DeFi and NFTs; the browser-extension model brings its own phishing risks.
